Four things break when an Etsy catalogue moves to Amazon: variations, product type attributes, main images and titles. Etsy is forgiving about structure and Amazon is not, so each one has to be rebuilt for Amazon’s flat files before upload, and the processing report has to be read properly after it. Here they are in the order they usually bite.
How do Etsy variations map to Amazon?
Not directly. Etsy lets you describe variations however you like. Amazon needs a parent-child structure with a defined variation theme for the category, and every child needs the full set of required attributes. Before building anything, decide for each product which Etsy options become Amazon variation themes, which become separate listings, and which are dropped.
Why do product types cause most flat file errors?
Because an Etsy listing has nothing to fill them with. Every Amazon category has a product type with its own required attributes and valid values. An Etsy listing has a title, tags and a description. The gap between the two is where most flat file errors come from. I build a mapping from Etsy fields to Amazon attributes once per product type, then apply it to the whole catalogue.
Do Etsy main images work on Amazon?
Usually not. Amazon’s main image rules are strict: pure white background, the product filling most of the frame, no props or text. Etsy main images are usually lifestyle shots. Plan for a new main image for every listing, and an image kit with the lifestyle shots as secondary images.
Can you reuse Etsy titles on Amazon?
Rewrite them instead. Etsy titles are built for Etsy search. Amazon titles have length limits, category conventions and a different search engine behind them. Write from keyword research on the Amazon category rather than shortening the Etsy title. This is part of every Amazon listing project.
How do you handle Amazon upload errors?
Read the processing report, fix in the file, re-upload. Even with a clean file, the first upload produces a report, and most of it is noise. The real errors cluster into a handful of types: invalid values, missing required attributes, variation mismatches and image issues. Tooling that validates the file before upload and triages the report afterwards is what makes this bearable at catalogue scale.
Can two Etsy shops share one Amazon account?
Yes, and it is usually the right move. If you run more than one Etsy shop, consolidate into a single Amazon seller account. Merge the catalogues before building the files, resolve duplicate products, and pick one naming convention. The two-shop consolidation case study shows the full project, and the leather goods launch shows the same playbook used on a new brand.
I have done this end to end, including the tooling. If you are planning a move, send me the shop link and I will tell you what will break first.
